N.D. Protest: How DARE Notre Dame honor Barack Obama.

Notre Dame Observer refuses to print the truth about abortion

Detail of the two Observer adsWhen the Pro-Life Action League conducts Face the Truth Tours, passersby sometimes complain that we shouldn’t have pictures of aborted babies on public streets where children might see them.

Though we disagree, we can at least sympathize with their desire to protect children from the harsh reality of abortion. More difficult to sympathize with—or even comprehend—is the conclusion by the editors of the Notre Dame Observer that college students need to be sheltered from the truth about abortion, too.

Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, one of the sponsors of this website and the protest of President Obama’s appearance at Notre Dame, made the bold move of purchasing a full page ad [PDF] in The Observer, the Notre Dame campus paper, including photos of an aborted baby.

The Observer reviewed an advance copy of the ad on April 17 and informed Dr. Miller that it was set to run in the April 22 edition. Five days later—only hours before the ad was set to be printed—Dr. Miller received an e-mail from The Observer informing her that the ad was “too graphic” and refusing to run it.

Dr. Miller argued that the photos were in fact quite tasteful and offered to crop the photos to make them more palatable. She was eventually told by Observer staff: “We will print no pictures of any aborted babies of any kind.”

Dr. Miller had no choice but to redesign the ad without the graphic abortion pictures. The redesigned ad [PDF] ran today, Tuesday, April 28.

God Bless you and those like you who withstand the ridicule of those who do not value life. Know that there are those of us out here who pray for you and honor you for taking up this great and valiant fight. When you read comments like “John says”….it make me very sad for him - such an angry human being. God Bless you “John says” and may he touch your heart so that you can feel his love for you - despite your anger

[...] I must say, even though I attended school there for four years and witnessed the prevalence of religious conservativism (it’s a Catholic school- what else would one expect?), when all this began to go down, I was unequivocally shocked.  Shocked that a school that is supposed to house so many intelligent minds – future leaders of industry, as they liked to remind us – could produce websites like this and this.
